CH4LLENGE Follower Cities

26 dedicated Follower Cities from different European countries which are committed to improving their mobility planning concepts are directly involved in the take-up and learning process in CH4LLENGE. They will be enabled to start and conduct sustainable urban mobility planning or to optimise existing practices in this field with the strategic objective of becoming advanced SUMP cities in their countries and regions.

CH4LLENGE offers Follower Cities to attend SUMP Challenge Training Workshops and National SUMP Challenge Seminars, as well as summer schools and e-learning courses. Involvement of Follower Cities is of great importance in order to build up sustainable urban mobility planning expertise as well as encourage and stimulate experience exchange and networking between cities. More information about the different events can be found on the the Information sheet for Follower Cities.

Development of SUMP Roadmaps for Follower Cities

The first step in the process of supporting the Follower Cities was an assessment of their local mobility situation which now serves as background information for the CH4LLENGE peer review team. In CH4LLENGE, this approach is used to help Follower Cities understand their urban transport planning, policies, activities and processes. The CH4LLENGE expert team, consisting of the Institute for Transport Studies Leeds (UK), Rupprecht Consult (Germany), POLIS (Belgium), and the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (Slovenia), analysed all self-assessment reports.

Following this analysis, Follower Cities were distributed into two groups with each group having a different focus within SUMP development / optimisation processes:

  • »Starter FC«  which will work on various steps towards SUMP development and receive expert advice on this (preparation of roadmaps towards SUMP; roadmaps will focus on the preparation phase of the SUMP process which includes steps such as determination of potential for a successful SUMP, definition of the development process, scope of the plan and analysis of the mobility situation as well as the development of scenarios)
  • »Advanced FC« which have already developed a SUMP or are currently developing a SUMP; they will focus in their road maps on the two for them most pressing challenges (out of the four challenges the project addresses)

The method for the definition of gaps and preparation of tailor-made road maps will build on the SUMP process as defined in the “Guidelines on the Development and Implementation of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan”.

Each Follower City has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to demonstrate their motivation to work with CH4LLENGE cities and experts to jointly tackle crucial planning barriers towards a sustainable urban mobility in their city.
